JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Samford Volleyball Team suffered a 3-1 loss to Jacksonville State in its third and final game of the Gamecock Classic on Saturday.
With the loss, the Bulldogs' record drops to 4-6 on the season.
For the second time on Saturday, Kenya McQuirter led the Bulldogs with 15 kills. Gracie Lynn Butler logged her second double-double of the day with a 10-kill, 13-dig performance.
Kate Morgan led the squad with 25 digs while Kayla Keshock disturbed 43 assists with eight digs.
Kate Wonus also posted double-digit kills, finishing Saturday's nightcap with 10. Greer Golden registered a team-best five block assists while also smashing seven kills.
Lauren Deaton's nine kills in the match brought her career total to 1,621, leaving her just 18 shy of tying the program record for career kills.
Samford jumped out to a 6-3 lead in set one and utilized a quick 3-0 run late in the set to take a 21-14 lead. The Bulldogs notched the final two points of the set on a kill by McQuirter and block assists from Wonus and Keshock to clinch the set.
The Gamecocks used an 8-1 start to control the momentum in set two. Samford would make things interesting with a 4-0 run that brought their deficit to 22-19 but would ultimately not be enough.
JSU rode the momentum of another big run in set three, rattling off seven straight to take a 13-4 lead and create enough breathing room to claim the set.
The Gamecocks created separation in set four with a 3-0 run to go up 16-10. The Bulldogs scored three straight at set point to make it 24-21 but would come up short in the set.
The Bulldogs will turn their attention to their home opener on Friday, Sept. 16 against Clemson in game one of the Samford Invite. First serve from the Pete Hanna Center is set for 7:00 p.m. (CST).
