GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford volleyball team earned its first Southern Conference win of the season in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-22) victory at UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon at Fleming Gymnasium.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in SoCon play. UNCG falls to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in league play.
 
For Samford in the win, Kenya McQuirter had 13 kills, while Lauren Deaton tallied 12 kills. Kate Morgan contributed 12 digs, while Kayla Keshock had 34 assists. For UNCG, Elayne Grisbee and Daija Jackson had five kills each.
 
In the first set, Samford jumped out to a 7-4 lead on a kill by Kate Wonus. UNCG fought back to tie the set at 11-11. The Bulldogs built a 19-15 lead on a kill by Gracie Lynn Butler. After UNCG cut the lead to 20-18, Samford scored five of the next six points to take the 25-19 set win.
 
It was all Samford in the second set as the Bulldogs raced out to a 9-3 lead on a kill by McQuirter. Samford built its lead to 19-8 following a service ace by Deaton. Samford closed out the second set with a commanding 25-11 victory.
 
UNCG took an early 3-1 lead in the third set. The Bulldogs fought back to take an 8-5 lead on a service ace by Wonus. UNCG came back to tie the score at 11-11, but Samford took a 16-12 lead on a kill by McQuirter. Samford built its lead to 24-18, but UNCG scored the next four points to cut the lead to 24-22. A kill by McQuirter gave Samford the 25-22 set win and the 3-0 match victory.
 
Samford will return home to host ETSU on Friday, Sept. 30. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
