Bailey Powers Bulldogs Past ETSU To Stay Unbeaten In SoCon Play

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Behind 25 points from the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week Andrea Bailey, the Samford women's basketball team sank the ETSU Buccaneers 68-58 on Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated in SoCon play.

With the victory, Samford moves to 10-9 on the year and climbs above the .500 threshold for the first time this season. The win also pushes the Bulldog winning streak to six games and matches the best start to league play since Samford joined the SoCon in 2008.

ETSU drops to 13-6 for the season and 0-3 in league play.

Despite only having six points at the half, Bailey exploded for 19 in the second half to pace Samford's second-half comeback. Bailey finished the afternoon with 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals, which were all team highs.

In her first-career start, Masyn Marchbanks poured in 13 points to join Bailey as the only two Bulldogs in double figures.

Carly Heidger continued her stellar play coming off the bench as the redshirt freshman added nine points and grabbed three boards on the afternoon.

Sussy Ngulefac was held without a point in the first half before aiding the Bulldog's second-half dramatics with seven points over the final 20 minutes of play.

In the opening quarter play, ETSU sprinted out to a 12-5 lead and led by seven on two separate occasions before Heidger hit a three-pointer from the ETSU midcourt logo to place the Bulldogs only down a pair at 18-16 after the opening 10 minutes of play.

After the Heidger trey, Samford went scoreless for nine minutes of game time in the second quarter before Kathleen Wheeler single-handily shift momentum with back-to-back threes in the final 90 seconds of the first half to shrink the ETSU advantage to 25-22 heading into the break.

The Samford offense chose violence coming out of the locker room and exploded for 30 points in the third quarter behind a 20-3 run that was powered by the likes of Bailey and Ngulefac.

Alyssa Tarpley hit a three-pointer with 6:26 remaining in the third to put Samford up for good. Samford led by as many as 14 in the third before ETSU clawed back to within two with under three minutes remaining in regulation.

Once again, Bailey played the role of closer when the senior scored seven of the final nine Bulldog points on the afternoon to secure the hard-fought 68-58 victory.

Bailey and the Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Jan. 21 at Mercer. The tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
