Samford Women’s Basketball Drops Saturday Contest At Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Samford women's basketball team fell in a 70-63 Saturday showdown with the Mercer Bears.
Samford drops to 10-10 on the campaign and 4-1 in Southern Conference play. Mercer moves to 7-11 and 3-2 in league action.
Masyn Marchbanks had her best game in a Bulldog uniform on Saturday as the freshman poured in a season-high 22 points to go along with five steals and a pair of assists. Marchbanks' 22 points are the most by a Samford freshman this season.
Joining Marchbanks in double figures, Andrea Bailey had a game-high 23 points for the guard's ninth 20-point game this season. Bailey also led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds while adding a pair of assists.
The dynamic backcourt duo of Marchbanks and Bailey combined to score 45 of the 63 Bulldog points on the afternoon.
A back-and-forth afternoon affair started with Mecer taking a 15-13 advantage after the first quarter of play that saw three separate lead changes and a 10-3 run for the first Samford surge of the day.
The second quarter featured a 10-0 run by the Bulldogs, which help build the largest Samford lead of the day before Mercer clawed by to take a three-point lead into the locker room at 31-28.
Samford dictated the pace for the majority of the third frame before surrendering the lead for good with just over a minute left in the Period.
A flurry of activity accompanied the fourth and final quarter as the two squads combined for 45 points.
The Bulldogs and Bear traded shots until Mercer ended the game by draining six straight free throws to prevail 70-63.
