Men’s Basketball Wins Seventh Straight at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Samford Men's Basketball Team (13-7, 7-0) notched its seventh-straight win to open Southern Conference play with a 69-59 road triumph over ETSU on Wednesday evening.

The victory marks the Bulldogs' longest winning streak since the 2005-06 season and their first time starting 7-0 in conference play since the 1998-99 campaign.

Logan Dye led the Bulldogs in scoring for the sixth-straight game with a 19-point performance. The senior forward now sits just 13 points shy of reaching 1,000 for his career.

Jermaine Marshall dominated on both ends of the floor with a 17-point 12-rebound effort in which he shot 60 percent (3-5) from three.

Jaden Campbell also finished in double figures with an 11-point night while Dye, Jaron Rillie, and Campbell all pulled down five rebounds each. A.J. Staton-McCray added seven points, with five clutch points over the final two minutes to help clinch the victory.

ETSU outscored the Bulldogs 10-4 over the first five minutes, but Samford came fighting back with a 14-8 run to tie the score at 18-all following an Achor Achor slam dunk at the 11:05 mark.

After falling behind 30-26 to the Bucs with 3:30 to go in the first, the Bulldogs outscored ETSU 9-3 the rest of the way to take a 35-33 lead into halftime. Marshall put an exclamation mark on the half by knocking down a contested three from 30 feet out as time expired.

The Bulldogs were able to keep pace with the Bucs, who shot 50 percent (13-26) from the floor and 56 percent (5-9) in the first, by scoring 20 of their 35 points in the paint. Dye (8) and Marshall (7) combined for 15 first-half points, with Marshall hauling in six rebounds over the first 20 minutes.

Samford created separation early in the second half with a 7-0 run that was capped off by a three from Dye at the 15:06 mark that put the Bulldogs up 47-35.

The Bucs went on to cut the Bulldog's lead to four points at the 11:40 mark (49-45) and then just two with 7:20 to play (55-53). Samford took control back of the game with a quick 8-2 however that put them up 63-56 following a trey from Marshall with 5:35 to play.

The Bulldog defense buckled down and held ETSU to just three points over the final five minutes. Staton-McCray came up huge with five points in crunch time, highlighted by a steal-and-score and-one that thwarted a Buc rally to put Samford up 66-59 with 2:05 to go before giving way to the 69-59 final tally.

The Bulldogs finished the night shooting 44 percent (24-54) from the floor, 32 percent (6-19) from three, and 75 percent (15-20) from the free throw line. Almost half of Samford's points came from close range, totaling 34 points in the paint for the evening.

Samford kept its turnover tally under double digits for the third-straight contest, conceding just nine in the game.

The Bulldogs did not give up a three-point field goal to ETSU in the second half (0-5), bringing the Bucs' average for the night down to 28 percent (5-18).

The Bulldogs will return home for their next SoCon test against Western Carolina. Tip-off from the Pete Hanna Center is slated for 5:00 p.m.
