GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Samford men's basketball team suffered its first Southern Conference loss of the season in a 91-84 overtime setback at Furman Wednesday evening at Timmons Arena.
With the loss, Samford falls to 14-8 overall and 8-1 in Southern Conference play. Furman improves to 16-6 overall and 7-2 in league play.
Samford was led in the game by
Logan Dye with 19 points and six rebounds. With the performance, Dye becomes the 30
th player in program history to reach the career 1,000-point mark. Dye now has 1,017 career points, ranking 29
th in school history.
Behind Dye for Samford,
A.J. Staton-McCray had 16 points and six rebounds.
Ques Glover had 15 points, while
Bubba Parham contributed 10 points and six assists.
Jaden Campbell also added 10 points for the Bulldogs.
For Furman, Jalen Slawson scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Mike Bothwell had 17 points for the Paladins, while J.P. Pegues had 15 points. Alex Williams tallied 13 points for the Paladins and Marcus Foster added 11 points.
Furman jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with 16:54 to go in the first half after a jumper by Pegues. Samford scored five of the next six points to cut the lead to one at 6-5 with 14:27 left in the half after a layup by
Nathan Johnson. With Furman leading, 13-11, the Paladins went on a 12-2 run to take a 25-13 lead at the 9:13 mark in the first half after a three-pointer by Carter Whitt.
With Furman leading, 27-15, Samford went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 27-22 with 5:55 to go in the half following a free throw by Dye. The Bulldogs closed to within four points at 34-30 with 1:39 left in the half after a free throw by Glover. Furman scored the next four points to push the lead to 38-30 with 48 seconds to go in the half, but Samford scored the final four points of the half to cut the lead to 38-34 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Samford scored the first 11 points of the second half to take a 45-38 lead with 17:02 to go after a layup by Dye. With Samford leading, 47-41, Furman went on a 7-0 run to take a 48-47 lead with 14:02 to go following a three-point play by Bothwell. With the game tied at 53-53, Samford scored five-straight points to take a 58-53 lead at the 9:17 mark after a three-pointer by Dye.
Furman fought back to tie the score at 61-61 with 6:26 to go after a pair of free throws by Slawson. The Bulldogs opened up a 68-63 lead with 4:43 left following a layup by Campbell. With Samford leading, 73-70, Furman's Williams hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 73-73 with 1:03 to go. Samford's Staton-McCray then hit a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 76-73 lead with 38 seconds to go, but Furman's Slawson delivered a three-pointer of his own to tie the score at 76-76 with 18 seconds left and the game went to overtime knotted at 76-76.
The teams went back and forth early in the overtime. Glover made a layup to give Samford an 83-82 lead with 1:44 to go. Williams then made a layup for an 84-83 Furman lead with 1:18 left. After Campbell made a free throw to tie the score at 84-84, Furman's Foster hit a three-pointer for an 87-84 lead with 30 seconds to go. The Paladins hit four-straight free throws down the stretch for the 91-84 win.
Samford will play at Wofford Saturday afternoon. The game is set for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Spartanburg, S.C.
