Volleyball Knocked Off by Furman at Home

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Volleyball team fell 3-1 to the Furman Paladins in Southern Conference play on Thursday evening from the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 10-13 overall and 5-6 in SoCon action. Furman improves to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in league play.
 
Gracie Lynn Butler logged her eighth double-double of the season, posting 12 kills and 11 digs on the evening. Kaleigh Meritt also notched a double-double, finishing with 18 kills and 11 digs.
 
Greer Golden hit .421 and registered 12 kills while Kate Morgan racked up a game-high 21 digs. Kayla Keshock distributed a team-high 28 assists while Lexi Thatcher added 17 assists.
 
Samford created separation in set one with a 4-0 run to go up 16-12. Furman later answered with a late 4-0 run to go up 19-17 but the Bulldogs fought back to tie the match at 25 and force extra points. Butler sealed the first set with a service ace that gave the Bulldogs a 28-26 win.
 
Furman took control of set two with a 3-0 run that put them up 19-13, but the Bulldogs answered with a 4-0 run later that trimmed their deficit to just 20-18. Samford battled back to tie it at 23 following a Paladin attack error, but Furman secured the final two points needed to take the set 25-23.
 
The two teams exchanged blows in set three, with the Bulldogs going up 20-18 after another Furman attack error. The Paladins rattled off a timely 5-0 run to take a 24-21 lead however on their way to winning the set 25-22.
 
The Paladins took a 7-2 lead in set three, but Samford chipped away and eventually took the lead when a Keyshock ace made the score 15-14 in favor of the Bulldogs. With the score reading 21-19 in favor of Samford, the Paladins used a 5-0 run to steal all of the momentum back and take a 24-21 lead before winning the set 25-23 and taking the match.
 
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 27 when they host Wofford for senior day in their 2023 home finale. First serve from the Pete Hanna Center is set for 7:00 p.m. (CST).
