Volleyball Completes Perfect Weekend with Sweep Over ETSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Volleyball team picked up its second-straight sweep in Southern Conference action with a 3-0 win over ETSU on Saturday evening.
 
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in SoCon play. ETSU falls to 1-16 overall and 1-5 in league action.
 
Kaleigh Meritt led the Bulldogs with a career-high 17 kills while also posting a .395 hitting percentage and 10 digs for her first collegiate double-double.
 
Gracie Lynn Butler recorded nine kills and eight digs while Kate Wonus and Sophia Plasman both smashed five kills, with Wonus registering four total blocks.
 
Kayla Keshock posted a team-high 19 assists and logged three blocks while Lexi Thatcher distributed 16 assists on the night.
 
On the defensive side, Kate Morgan led the Bulldogs with 11 digs while Annabelle Straty added six.
 
The Bucs took a 13-10 lead in set one, but the Bulldogs fought back and took advantage of a 4-0 run to go up 17-14. A kill by Butler gave the Bulldogs a 21-17 lead, but the Bucs came charging back with a 4-0 run to tie the set. ETSU grabbed two huge points late to tie the score at 24, but the Bulldogs answered by winning the next two rallies to claim the set 26-24.
 
The Bulldogs used a 6-0 start in set two to take control and added another 6-0 run in the set to go up 19-8. From there, the Bulldogs were able to cruise to a 25-13 second-set victory.
 
 Set three followed a similar narrative, with Samford jumping out to a 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs put the match out of reach with another 7-0 run that gave them a 16-4 advantage before clinching the match with a 25-11 win in the third set.
 
Samford posted its third-best hitting percentage on the season, finishing the contest hitting .304. Despite hitting .133 in set one, the Bulldogs finished strong by hitting .394 and .500 in the final two sets.
 
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 12 when they host Mercer at 7:00 p.m. from the Pete Hanna Center.
