BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team scored early and often on its way to a 3-0 win over The Citadel Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
With the win, Samford improved to 8-3-4 overall and 4-1-1 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel dropped to 3-6-5 overall and 0-5-1 in league play. The win marked Samford's 11
th shutout of the season, the highest total in the nation.
Mary Raymond started the scoring with a goal off a corner kick from
Alyssa Conarton in the fifth minute of the game for a 1-0 Samford lead. The Bulldogs added to their lead when
Kyla Reynolds netted a goal in the 14
th minute off an assist from
Layla Brown.
Mia Wehby rounded out the scoring with a goal off assists from
Brigid McElderry and
Sarah Holland in the 39
th minute.
As a team, Samford outshot The Citadel, 23-5. Samford had eight corner kicks, to four for The Citadel.
Hanna Rae Himes led Samford in shots with five, while Wehby and
Mary-Ainsley Alack had three shots each. The Citadel was led by Grace Duncan with two shots. Samford goalkeeper
Zoe Clevely played the first 76:58 of the game, saving two shots, while
Emma Donley played the final 13:02 in goal. The Citadel's Nora Sampson played the first half in goal, saving three shots and allowing three goals. Grace Laws played the second half in goal for the visitors, saving two shots.
