WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Samford men's basketball team opened the 2023-24 season with a 98-45 setback at second-ranked Purdue Monday evening at Mackey Arena.

With the loss, Samford is 0-1 on the young season. Purdue has a record of 1-0.

Samford was led in the game by
Jaden Campbell with 11 points.
Rylan Jones scored eight points, while
Achor Achor grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

For Purdue, National Player of the Year Zach Edey had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Camden Heide scored 13 points for the Boilermakers, while Fletcher Loyer and Braden Smith added 12 points each.

Purdue opened the game strong taking a 21-1 advantage with 13:59 to go in the first half following a three-pointer by Loyer. The Boilermakers led by as many as 34 points in the first half, and the Boilermakers took a 51-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Purdue opened the period with a 14-5 run to push its lead to 65-22 with 16:13 left on a dunk by Edey. Purdue led by as many as 53 points in the second half and the Boilermakers finished with the 98-45 win.

Samford will next play at VCU on Friday, Nov. 10. The game is set for a 6 p.m. (CT) start from Richmond, Va.
