Men’s Hoops Holds off Late Charge From The Citadel to Grab 76-70 Home Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Men's Basketball Team picked up its fourth straight victory with a 76-70 defeat of Southern Conference foe The Citadel on Saturday, Feb. 11.
 
The win improves Samford's record to 18-9 overall and 12-2 in SoCon action while The Citadel falls to 9-18 overall and 4-10 in league play.
 
Jermaine Marshall led the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds. The junior forward shot 7-10 from the field and 2-3 from three.
 
Logan Dye and Ques Glover both chipped in for 16 points, with Dye shooting 10-13 from the free throw line and Glover knocking down six of nine field goal attempts.
 
The Citadel outscored Samford 10-9 over the first five minutes, but the Bulldogs caught fire with a 13-4 run to go up 22-14 on a layup by Glover at the 9:06 mark.
 
The Citadel fought their way back by scoring 10 of the game's next 14 points and trimming Samford's lead to 26-24 with 3:14 to go in the half. Samford got the offense back going for the final three minutes of the half to take a 32-27 lead into the break.
 
Samford opened the second half by outscoring The Citadel 10-6 and taking a 42-33 lead following a layup by Jaden Campbell at the 15:17 mark.
 
After seeing The Citadel cut The Bulldogs' lead to 46-43 with 10:06 to go, Samford put its foot on the gas and rattled off a 17-5 run to go up 63-48 with four minutes to play.
 
The Citadel clawed its way back over the next three and a half minutes by outscoring Samford 16-9 and trimming the Bulldogs' lead to 72-64 with 26 seconds left. Tension rose as The Citadel scored six unanswered points in 19 seconds to make it just a two-point game with seven seconds left, but Dye iced the contest by knocking down his next four shots from the foul line to give way to the 76-70 final score.
 
A 52 percent (12-23) shooting second half helped Samford finish the night at 48 percent (25-52) from the field. The Bulldogs tallied 33 bench points and 30 points in the paint.
 
Despite The Citadel shooting 52 percent (26-50) on the afternoon, Samford's defense stepped up to force 22 turnovers and 13 steals, both season-highs in SoCon play. The Bulldogs additionally added 20 points off The Citadel turnovers.
 
The men's basketball team will return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 15 when they welcome UNCG in a battle for first place in the SoCon Standings. Tip-off from the Pete Hanna Center is slated for 6:30 p.m. (CST).
