Men’s Hoops Heads to VMI for Saturday Showdown

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Men's Basketball Team will take on the VMI Keydets on Saturday, Feb. 18 in Southern Conference action.

Tip-off from Lexington, Va. is set for 12:00 p.m. (CST), with the contest streaming live on ESPN+.

The Bulldogs are coming off an 83-71 home victory against UNCG on Wednesday to improve to 13-2 in SoCon play and gain sole possession of first place in the conference standings.

The Bulldogs tallied 57 second-half points in the win, outscoring the Spartans 45-21 over the final 11 and a half minutes to flip a 12-point deficit to a 12-point win.

The Bulldogs turned it up a notch in the second half of their win over UNCG on Wednesday, shooting 58 percent (15-26) on field goals, 57 percent (8-14) from three, and 79 percent (19-24) from the free throw line.

Bubba Parham led a quartet of Bulldogs that scored in double figures with a season-high 21 points. Ques Glover (17), Jermaine Marshall (15), and A.J. Staton-McCray (14) all also tallied double-digit point totals, with Staton-McCray hauling in a team-high seven rebounds.

Saturday's match-up is the 23rd meeting between Samford and VMI, in a series that dates back to 1967. The Bulldogs hold a 17-5 series advantage having won three of the last five contests and seven of the last 10.

The Bulldogs bested VMI 87-78 on Jan. 4 earlier this season. Logan Dye scored a team-high 18 points and pulled in eight rebounds while Marshall posted 16 points and 10 boards in the victory.

Glover is averaging a team-high 18.5 points per game against SoCon opponents on the road while Dye is averaging 16.9 points and 6.3 boards per contest. Marshall brings with him an average of 11.1 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game in road match-ups.

The Bulldogs were receiving votes in the most recent CollegeInsider.com Men's Mid-Major Top 25 poll release on Feb. 13. Furman (10) and UNCG (RV) also made an appearance in the rankings.

Samford needs just one more victory to achieve its second-straight 20-win regular season. It would mark the first time in program history that the Bulldogs posted 20 regular-season wins in consecutive seasons.

The VMI Keydets (6-22, 1-14 SoCon) fell 78-58 against Chattanooga at home on Wednesday evening. Rickey Bradley Jr. scored a team-high 20 points while Taeshaud Jackson logged a 15-point, 11-rebound performance.

Asher Woods leads a group of four Keydets averaging double digits in scoring at 13.6 points per game. Jackson comes in as VMI's leading rebounder at 6.7 boards per contest.

The Keydets have been one of the best free throw shooting teams in SoCon play this season, posting an efficiency of 77.3 percent from the charity stripe against conference opponents this season.
