Men’s Basketball Lights it up in 96-61 Road Rout of VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Samford Men's Basketball Team put on an offensive clinic in its 96-61 blowout victory at VMI on Saturday.

With the win, Samford improves to 20-9 overall and 14-2 in Southern Conference play. It is the fourth time the Bulldogs have notched 20 wins in a season and the first time in program history that the Bulldogs have recorded consecutive seasons with 20 regular-season wins.

Samford sits just one league win shy of tying the 1998-99 squad for most conference victories in a season at 15.

The Bulldogs used a monster second half to pull away from VMI, outscoring them 65-31 over the final 20 minutes. Samford knocked down 15 threes in the second half on 21 attempts (71%) while shooting 23-34 from the field (68%).

The Bulldogs' 21 threes marked the most in a game since their 2020-21 season and the third-most in program history. Their three-point total also accounted for the most in a SoCon game in program history, and the ninth-most ever made by a SoCon team in a game.

For the second-straight game, Bubba Parham led the team in scoring with 19 points. The senior guard was en fuego from the floor, knocking down seven of eight shots and five of six threes.

Jaron Rillie recorded a season-high 17 points with eight assists while A.J. Staton-McCray scored 13. Jermaine Marshall stuffed the stat sheet with a 13-point, seven-rebound, four-assist, and three-steal day.

Samford set the tone early, using a pair of threes from Staton McCray to help jump out to a 9-0 lead just two minutes into the action. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 15-7 before the Keydets fought back with a 10-3 run to make it an 18-17 Samford lead at the 10:07 mark.

After a pair of free throws from Asher Woods made the score 27-23 in favor of Samford, the Bulldogs scored eight of the half's final 11 points to take a 36-25 lead into halftime.

The Bulldogs kept their foot on the gas by outscoring VMI 15-6 to begin the half and take a 50-32 lead following a trey by Staton-McCray. From there, the Bulldogs outscored VMI 25-13 over the next nine minutes to go up 75-45 with 5:38 to play.

Samford took its largest lead of the game on its final field goal, a jumper from Brody Boyer that gave the Bulldogs a 96-61 lead.

The Bulldogs set a season-high with 25 assists, marking the second time this season that they record 20 or more in a game. The previous instance also came against VMI on Jan.7.

Samford only turned the ball over seven times, while forcing 14 from the Keydets that led to 20 points.  The Bulldogs additionally tallied 32 bench points and 20 points in the paint.

The Bulldogs will play their final road contest of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Chattanooga. Tip-off from Chattanooga, Tenn. is set for 6:00 p.m. (CST).
