Men’s Hoops Clinches Share of SoCon Regular-Season Crown at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.— The Samford Men's Basketball Team clinched a share of the Southern Conference Regular-Season title on Wednesday with its 75-70 victory at Chattanooga on Wednesday evening.

The victory marks the Bulldogs' seventh in a row and improves them to 21-9 overall and 15-2 in SoCon action. The win also matches the 1998-99 team for the most conference wins in a season in program history.

Jermaine Marshall led the Bulldogs with a career-high 25 points, to go along with eight rebounds. Ques Glover also finished in double figures, tallying 10 points and five rebounds. Bubba Parham dished out a team-high five assists while also hauling in four rebounds and scoring six points.

The Bulldogs outscored the Mocs 11-10 over the first four minutes of action, with a trey from Marshall at the 16:34 mark giving Samford a one-point advantage.

The two teams battled back and forth over the next seven minutes, with the Bulldogs knocking down six of 13 shots to outscore Chattanooga 17-12 and take a 25-22 lead at the 9:43 mark.

Five lead changes took place over the final nine minutes of the half, with the Mocs edging the Bulldogs 16-15 to take a 38-37 lead into the break.

Both teams struggled out of the gate in the second half, with Chattanooga outscoring Samford 7-2 over the first five and a half minutes.

The Mocs' lead held for the next six-plus minutes before a Marshall three capped off a 19-12 run by the Bulldogs to put them up 58-56 with 7:53 to play.

Two more lead changes transpired before a jumper by Glover at the 1:53 mark gave Samford a 1:53 lead. The Mocs kept fighting over the final minute and a half, but the Bulldogs went a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line to help ice the contest.

Samford finished the night shooting 39 percent (21-53) from the floor, 38 percent (11-29) from three, and 73 percent (22-30) from the foul line. Wednesday's contest featured 20 lead changes and seven tied scores.

The Bulldogs will play their final contest of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 21 against Furman in a battle for the outright SoCon Regular Season Championship. Tip-off from the Pete Hanna Center is set for 1:00 p.m. (CST), with the contest airing live on CBS Sports Network.
