Bulldogs Drop Heartbreaker To No. 7 Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In the first midweek game of the 2023 season, the Samford softball team fell in a tightly contested 3-2 decision at No. 7 Alabama on Wednesday night.

With the loss, Samford drops to 2-7 on the year with five of the seven losses coming by a run. The Crimson Tide moves to 7-2.

Jordyn Partain was tagged with the loss despite only allowing a pair of runs during her inning of relief work. McKenzie Newcomb started the game in the circle for Samford and tossed four innings of one-run ball with a strikeout.

The lone Bulldog hit of the night came off the bat of McKayla Cothran in the third inning.

Samford held the Crimson Tide to a 0-0 tie through the opening three frames before several Alabama miscues gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

The inning started when Ansley Yantis was hit by a pitch and then advanced to third two pitches later on an Alabama error off the bat of Grier Bruce. Abagail Dorsett pinch ran for Bruce and came around to score with Yantis on a Logan Champion ground ball that went under the Crimson Tide shortstop's glove allowing both runs to score.

Alabama got one back in the home half of the fourth to make it 2-1. With a run in the bottom of the fifth, Partain replaced Newcomb in the circle. The sophomore subsequently neutralized the threat to preserve the one-run with a swinging strikeout to end the inning.

The Crimson Tide took the lead for good In the bottom of the six with a pair of runs with Lainey Baker in the circle.

A Chole Poss two-out pinch-hit walk was the lone Samford threat in the seventh before Alabama closed out the 3-2 game.

Samford returns to Birmingham on Friday to host Southern Indiana, IUPUI and North Alabama in the Samford Bulldog Classic.
