Men’s Basketball Falls to Furman in Regular-Season Finale

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Men's Basketball Team fell 93-79 to the Furman Paladins on Saturday in front of a packed Pete Hanna Center to close out regular-season play.
 
With the loss, Samford drops to 21-10 overall and 15-3 in league play. Furman finishes off the regular season 24-7 while matching the Bulldogs with a mark of 15-3 in Southern Conference play. Both teams claim a share of the SoCon regular-season title, with the Paladins earning the tiebreaker to clinch the No. 1 seed in the SoCon Tournament next week in Asheville, N.C.
 
The Bulldogs' 15 conference wins mark their most as a member of the SoCon and most in program history, matching the 1998-99 squad that finished 15-1 in the TAAC.
 
Ques Glover led the Bulldogs with a season-high 27 points and four assists on an 8-13 shooting day. Jermaine Marshall recorded 19 points with eight boards while Logan Dye added 13 points and four rebounds.
 
The Paladins set the tone early, outscoring the Bulldogs 18-7 over the first eight minutes. Samford fought its way back with an 11-6 run over the next four minutes, with a layup by Glover cutting the score to 24-20 in favor of Furman.
 
Furman continued to see success on offense, outscoring the Bulldogs 12-6 over the next two minutes to take a 36-26. From there, the Paladins outscored Samford 14-7 to take a 50-33 lead into halftime.
 
Three-point shooting proved to be the difference maker in the first half, with Samford knocking down just one of nine and the Paladins converting 10 of 17. Glover put together his best first-half performance of the season, tallying 16 points and knocking down five of six field goals.
 
The Bulldogs scored 14 points over the first five minutes of the second half, but Furman kept pace by scoring 12 to lead 62-48 following a layup from Marshall at the 14:06 mark.
 
Samford scored seven of the game's next 10 points to cut their deficit to 65-55 and eventually got to within eight points after a Marshall layup made the score 70-62 Furman with 9:09 to go.
 
Furman responded by scoring six of the next eight points to go up 76-64 at the 7:33 mark and went on to outscore the Bulldogs 14-9 to take a 90-73 lead before giving way to the 93-79.
 
The Bulldogs shot 47 percent (27-57) for the day, with a mark of 76 percent (19-25) on three throws and 29 percent (6-21) from three.
 
The Paladins shot 55 percent (29-53) from the floor, with a mark of 50 percent (14-28) from three, and a clip of 88 percent (21-24) from the foul line.
 
The Samford defense forced 14 turnovers that led to 13 points. The Bulldogs additionally scored 13 points in the paint.
 
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the SoCon Tournament next week in Asheville, N.C. They will begin their quest for a tournament championship on Saturday, March 4 in game five of the tournament at 5:00 p.m. (CST). An opponent will be announced when it becomes official.
