Newcomb Powers Samford To Win Over IUPUI In Saturday Split

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – To conclude the second day of the Samford Bulldog Classic, the Samford, led by McKenzie Newcomb, tamed the IUPUI Jaguars 3-1 after the matinee 2-1 to the North Alabama Lions.

Samford will end the final day of the Samford Bulldog Classic with a 2-2 mark on the weekend and a 4-9 record overall.

In game one, freshman Kinley Pate drove in the lone Bulldog run of the game with a single up the middle in the third. Logan Champion and Lindsey Nelson each collected a base knock in the contest.

Despite getting tagged with the loss, Jordyn Partain threw her first complete game of the season. The sophomore allowed one earned run and seven sporadic hits over seven innings of work.

The Lions score one in the first and one in the second to take a 2-0 lead after the opening pair of frames.

In the third, Lindsey Nelson rocketed a one-out double down the left field line and later came around to score the lone Samford run of the game on the Pate single back through the box.

After a run was plated in each of the first three innings, a pitcher's duel commenced as neither team could mustard a run over the final five innings.

The North Alabama game was Samford's seventh one-run loss of the 2023 season.

Just like on Friday, the nightcap brought the Bulldogs better luck.

Game two become the Newcomb show as the sophomore had a one-run complete game performance with eight strikeouts in the circle.

Not to be outdone, Newcomb crushed a three-run no-doubt home run to drive in all three Bulldog runs in the nightcap.

The Samford trio of Chloe Poss, Logan Champion and Sarah Squillace played supporting roles as each Bulldog recorded a hit. Champion and Merritt Cahoon scored on the Newcomb homer.

After a scoreless first, Cahoon and Champion worked back-to-back leadoff walks in the bottom of the second. Following a Bulldog out, Newcomb stepped to the plate and turned on a 2-2 pitch for the first home run of her career. The three-run shot gave Samford its first lead of the day.

IUPUI scored on a passed ball in the top of the third before being promptly shut down by Newcomb for four innings of the game to preserve the 3-1 Bulldog victory.
