Men’s Basketball Picks up Wire-to-Wire Win Over ETSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Men's Basketball Team never trailed in its 73-62 Southern Conference victory against ETSU on Saturday, Feb. 4 from the Pete Hanna Center.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 16-9 overall and 10-2 in SoCon action. The victory matches Samford's SoCon win total from last season when the Bulldogs finished 10-8 to place third in the regular-season standings.

A.J. Staton-McCray led the Bulldogs with 16 points and six rebounds on a 5-11 shooting day. The sophomore guard set a career-high in steals, tallying five of the team's 12 on the day.

Jermaine Marshall and Bubba Parham both logged 10 points, with Marshall grabbing three boards and Parham dishing out three assists.

The Bulldogs scored 10 of the game's first 11 points and jumped out to a 26-7 lead at the 8:18 mark following a three by Staton-McCray. It would be the first of two 19-point leads for Samford in the half, with the second coming on a Parham trey at the 4:26 mark to put the Bulldogs up 34-15.

ETSU fought its way back over the final four minutes of the half, outscoring the Bulldogs 18-9 to cut Samford's lead to 43-33 at the half.

The Bulldogs outscored the Bucs 11-3 over the first five minutes of the second half, with a Nathan Johnson layup giving Samford a 50-34 lead at the 15:01 mark. Samford then scored 10 of the game's next 12, as a jumper by Marshall with 10:25 to go gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game at 60-36.

The Bucs chipped away at their deficit by rattling off a 19-6 run over the next seven-plus minutes, as a three by Jordan King made the score 66-55 in favor of Samford with 2:52 to play. The Bulldogs held steady for the remainder of the game however, tallying six points over the final two and a half minutes to keep the game out of reach and gave way to the 73-62 final score.

A stingy defensive effort by the Bulldogs saw them force 19 turnovers that led to 25 points. Samford's 12 steals marked the most by them in a SoCon game this season.

The Bulldogs finished the day shooting 38 percent (21-55) from the floor. Samford eclipsed 25 made free throws for the fifth time this season, knocking down 26 of 33 shots (79%) from the charity stripe on the afternoon.

Both teams recorded 36 rebounds, with the Bulldogs compiling 27 bench points and 26 points in the paint.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 9 when they travel to Macon, Ga. to take on Mercer at 6:00 p.m. (CST).
