CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Samford women's tennis team opened Southern Conference play with a 5-2 win at Chattanooga Friday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Center.
With the win, Samford improves to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in SoCon play. Chattanooga falls to 11-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Chattanooga took an early lead by winning on the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts to earn the doubles point. Samford won the doubles match at No. 2, with
Alexis Lopez and
Lauren Waddles defeating Callie Billman and Nicole Abel, 7-5.
In singles Samford won on each of the first five courts to take the 5-2 win. At No. 1 singles, Lopez earned a 6-1, 7-5 win over Jessie Young. On the No. 2 singles court,
Ally Hayduk defeated Coco Bosman, 7-6, 6-1. At No. 3 singles,
Samantha Nanere defeated Caroline Gibbens, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 4 singles,
Lindsay Song earned a 6-4, 7-6 win over Abel.
Cameron Rogin picked up a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 over Lucia Melendez on the No. 5 singles court.
Samford will host ETSU Sunday. The match is set for a 12 p.m. start from the Samford Tennis Center.
