Samford Drops Midweek Contest To No. 19 Auburn

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team fell 10-0 in five innings to the No. 19 Auburn Tigers on Wednesday night at Samford Softball Stadium in front of a near-capacity crowd.
 
The Bulldogs drop to 14-19 on the year after the non-conference defeat. Auburn moves to 26-9 after the midweek. 
 
McKenzie Newcomb started in the circle for Samford and was pegged with the loss after allowing six runs in 3.1 innings of work. Only two of Newcomb's six runs were earned as the Bulldog defense committed four errors on the night.
 
In a relief appearance, Jordyn Partain surrendered four earned runs in 1.2 innings on Wednesday. 
 
The lone Samford hit of the night came off the bat of Ansley Yantis in the bottom of the fifth. McKayla Cothran, Grier Bruce and Lindsey Nelson each reached base via walk in the game. 
 
Samford's best scoring chances of the evening came in the first and fifth innings as a pair of Bulldogs reached base in each frame before ultimately being stranded. 
 
Auburn scored one run in the first and one run in the third before plating four in the fourth and four in the fifth for the 10-0 final.
 
UP NEXT:
Samford returns to Southern Conference play on Saturday as the Bulldogs head to Western Carolina for the league road opener. The doubleheader
with the Catamounts is slated to get underway at noon CT.
