Softball Drops Pair Of Extra Inning Games At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford softball team returned to Southern Conference play on Saturday by falling in pair of one-run extra inning games to UNCG by scores of 4-3 and 1-0.

Samford will enter the weekend series finale on Sunday with an overall record of 17-25 and 6-6 in SoCon play, while UNCG moves to 26-16 and 5-2.

In game one, Bulldog outfielder Lindsey Nelson shined. The junior collected three hits, including her fourth home run of the year, drove in a pair of runs, and scored once in the series opener. Merritt Cahoon added two more hits of her own and scored once.

In the circle, McKenzie Newcomb got the start for the Bulldogs and tossed seven innings of three-run ball in a no-decision. Reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week Jordyn Partain relieved Newcomb in the eighth and allowed the winning run after recording two outs.

Nelson opened the scoring in game one with a solo home run in the top of the second before Cahoon scored on a Newcomb RBI ground out in the top of the fourth that made it 2-0 with three and a half innings in the book.

UNCG answered right back in the home half of the fourth with a pair of runs to tie the game before taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run.

Nelson tied the game in the sixth with an RBI double to right center that scored Kinley Pate, who was running for Cahoon.

UNCG worked back-to-back leadoff walks off of Partain to start the bottom of the eighth that resulted in a Spartan scoring on a sacrifice fly to win the game 4-3.

Game two proved to be much more of a pitcher's duel as Partain and UNCG's Rhyann Jones held their opponents scoreless for seven innings.

Partain walked six Spartans in the nightcap but held UNCG to a pair of hits with three strikeouts.

The Bulldog trio of Grier Bruce, Ansley Yantis and Cahoon were the only Samford batters to mustard a hit off of UNCG's Jones.

Samford's best scoring threat came in the second inning when Bruce poked a leadoff single to right field to extend her hit streak to seven games. A sacrifice bunt and a groundout to first moved Bruce to third before a foul out stranded the sophomore.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning when a walk, a fielder's choice and a Bulldog error loaded the bases. A Partain wild pitch got past Logan Champion and allowed a Spartan to come home to score.
