BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team moved into a first-place tie in the Southern Conference standings with Chattanooga after defeating the Mocs, 6-1, on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 10-9 overall and 5-1 in Southern Conference play. Chattanooga falls to 15-5 overall and 5-1 in league play. If Samford can earn a win in the final match of the regular season next Saturday at Mercer, the Bulldogs would earn at least a share of the league regular season title.
 
Samford earned the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. At No. 1 doubles, Maxwell Giddens and Sandeep Mohandoss defeated Simon Labbe and Peyton Gatti, 6-4. On the No. 3 doubles court, Mohammed Ali Bellalouna and J.B. Pickard earned a 6-1 win over Gabriel Castillo and Cortland Grove.
 
In singles, Samford picked up wins at the first five positions to finish off the 6-1 victory. At No. 1 singles, Bellalouna defeated Kerim Hyatt, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Giddens defeated Labbe, 6-3, 7-5.
 
On the No. 3 singles court, Mohandoss earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Castillo. At the No. 4 position, Pickard defeated Gatti, 6-1, 7-5. At No. 5 singles, Darcy Nicholls defeated Ryan Mudre, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.
 
Samford will wrap up the 2023 regular season with a match at Mercer next Saturday, April 15. The match is set for an 11 a.m. (CT) start from Macon, Ga.
