SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford Volleyball team fell 3-0 on Friday evening at Southern Conference foe Wofford College.
With the loss, the Bulldogs slip to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Terriers improve to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in league action.
Gracie Lynn Butler notched a game-high 14 kills while finishing one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Kaleigh Meritt (9) and Kayla Keshock (6) combined for 15 kills while both adding three digs each.
Lexi Thatcher dished out a team-high 31 assists while Kate Morgan led the Bulldog defensive efforts with 15 digs.
Wofford took a 10-9 lead in set one following a 4-0 run. A kill by Greer Golden gave The Bulldogs a 13-12 lead, but the Terriers responded with another 4-0 run to go up 16-13. Samford used the momentum of a late 4-0 run to go up 20-18 and from there went up 22-20 after a kill from Butler. Wofford answered with three consecutive points to go up 24-23 and later claimed the set 26-24 in extra points.
The Terriers took control of set two with a 6-0 run that gave them a 12-5 lead. Samford clawed its way back with a 6-0 run that trimmed Wofford's lead to 19-17. The Terriers finished the set strong, however, tallying the final five points to win it 25-18.
In set three, Wofford once again used a 6-0 run to go on top 14-8. The Terriers put the set out of reach with a late 4-0 run that put them up 23-12 before eventually winning it 25-14.
The Bulldogs finished the night with 37 kills, compared to 34 by the Terriers. Samford also bested Wofford in the assist stat column, 34-29, and in digs, 38-36.
"I liked our execution and start of the match," Head Coach
Keylor Chan said. "We had our opportunity to win set one and that is critical when you are on the road and playing a very good team. We will have to learn from this match and move on quickly to be prepared to play Furman tomorrow."
Samford will return to the court on Saturday when they travel to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman at 3:00 p.m. (CST).
