Samford Football Sprints Past ETSU, 42-28

BIRMINGHAM, Ala – In conditions that felt more like July than late September in central Alabama, the Samford football team broke a three-game losing streak by toppling the Buccaneers of ETSU 42-28 on Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

With the win, Samford improves to 2-3 on the year and 1-2 in Southern Conference action. The Buccaneers fall to 1-3 overall and 0-1 for league play.

Running back Jay Stanton had his best game in a Samford uniform as the senior racked up a career-high 177 rushing yards on 25 carries while finding the end zone twice on the afternoon. Stanton's 177 yards on the ground are the most rushing yards in a single game by a Bulldog since Denzel Williams scampered for 178 yards against VMI in 2014.

Not to be outdone on the offensive side of the ball, Michael Hiers finished off the victory with 399 yards on 42-of-50 passing with a touchdown to Ty King at the end of the first half. Hiers also showed off his rushing prowess by adding two more touchdowns on the ground.

King had a game-high 116 yards on eight receptions and a second-quarter touchdown to pace the Samford receivers on the day. Chandler Smith grabbed eight passes for 98 yards, while E. Jai Mason enjoyed his best game as a Bulldog by hauling in six passes for 46 yards to round out the top of the Bulldog receiving corps.

On the day, 10 different Bulldogs caught a pass with seven catching three or more balls in the winning effort.

On the defensive side of the ball, Noah Martin led all Samford defenders with eight tackles, a tackle for loss and a QB hurry. Garrett Morris and Jaden Mosley each had six tackles, while Morris added an interception on the opening ETSU drive of the game. The defensive back duo of Kourtlan Marsh and Devin Smith added four more tackles of thier own.

In total, Samford outgained ETSU by 205 yards and the Bulldog pass defense held the Buccaneers to 118 yards through the air on only nine completions.

After winning the toss and deferring the ball to the second half, Morris picked off ETSU's Tyler Riddell on the fifth play of the game and returned it to the Samford 37. Four plays later, Stanton put the Bulldogs up 7-0 with a 28-yard sprint to the end zone.

ETSU tied it at 7-all on the opening drive of the second quarter before Stanton plunged in from a yard out with 9:08 remaining in the first half to put the Bulldogs back up on top at 14-7.

In the dying moments of the first half, Hiers uncorked a 59-yard touchdown to King to make it a 21-14 game before the Buccaneers found the end zone with 33 ticks left for the 21-21 halftime score.

Samford grabbed the lead for good when Hiers scrambled for a seven-yard touchdown to make it a 28-21 game with just under 13 minutes left in the third.

The Bulldogs put the game out of reach when Mychael Hamilton found paydirt from a yard out to give the Red, White and Blue a 35-21 advantage.

Hiers played the role of closer on Saturday as the quarterback went up and over the pile at the goal line for his third and final score of the day to make it a 42-21 game.

Following the kickoff, ETSU took a 70-yard run to the house before Samford clamped down over the final nine minutes of regulation to complete the 42-28 home win.

Before hosting Furman at Seibert Stadium in a highly anticipated game on Oct. 14, the Bulldogs will hit the road for a contest at Wofford on Oct. 7. Kickoff in Spartanburg, S.C. is slated for 12:30 p.m. CT.
