Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bulldogs Tie School Record With 14th-Straight Win, Downing UNCG, 79-70

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's basketball team won its 14th-straight game, defeating UNC Greensboro, 79-70 Thursday evening at the Pete Hanna Center.

The 14-game win streak is tied with Utah State for the longest current streak in the nation. It also is the longest in the Division I history of the Samford program and it is tied with the 1960-61 team for the overall program record. Samford's record improved to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in Southern Conference play. UNC Greensboro fell to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in league action.

Samford was led in the game by Achor Achor with 22 points. Jaden Campbell had 21 points and eight rebounds, while Rylan Jones tallied 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

"Overall, we had incredible play from Achor," Samford head coach Bucky McMillan said. "Jaden Campbell was really good, hadn't practiced as much this week, but he was great. Rylan Jones almost had a triple-double and that doesn't happen very often. His value to our team is incredible, the great plays he can make, the way he sees the game and what he's about, his intangibles in terms of knowing where he's supposed to be. His leadership is just indescribable."

For UNCG, Mikeal Brown-Jones had 20 points and nine rebounds. Kobe Langley had 15 points and six assists for the Spartans.

After UNCG took an early 3-2 lead, Samford went on an 8-0 run to take a 10-3 lead with 15:08 left in the first half after a jumper by Campbell. The Spartans fought back to cut the lead to one point at 12-11 with 13:31 to go in the opening half after a three-pointer by Joryam Saizonou.

Samford pushed its lead out to 10 points at 23-13 with 6:55 to go in the first half after a three-pointer by Jones. The Bulldogs led by as many as 13 points down the stretch in the first half and Samford took a 40-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Spartans cut the Samford lead to eight points at 45-37 with 16:47 to go after a jumper by Brown-Jones. Samford pushed its lead back out to 13 points at 50-37 with 15:39 left after a three-point play by Achor.

The Bulldogs maintained a double-digit lead through most of the second half until UNCG cut the lead to just seven points at 65-58 with 6:36 to go after a layup by Brown-Jones. The Spartans got as close as six points at 76-70, but Samford came away with the 79-70 win.

Samford will next play host to the VMI Keydets Saturday evening. The game is set for a 5 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
