Samford Soccer Fights Furman To 1-1 Draw

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team fought the Furman Paladins to a 1-1 draw in a key Southern Conference game Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
 
With the tie, Samford now has a record of 6-6-2 overall and 3-1-1 in Southern Conference play. Furman is now 5-4-3 overall and 1-0-2 in league play.
 
Fleming Dean scored Samford's goal in the match. She also led all players in shots with five. Whitaker Buchanan also registered an assist. Peyton Hull played all 90 minutes in goal, saving five shots and only allowing a goal on a penalty kick.
 
Tara Katz scored Furman's goal. Addison Corn played in goal for the Paladins, saving five shots and allowing the one goal.
 
The teams played through the first half in a scoreless tie. Furman's Katz broke the stalemate when she scored on a penalty kick in the 69th minute of the contest. Samford answered five minute later when Dean scored on a header off a free kick from Buchanan to knot the score at 1-1.
 
As a team, Samford took 18 shots, to 14 for Furman. Each team had six shots on goal. Furman had four corner kicks, to three for the Bulldogs.
 
Samford will next go on the road to play at VMI on Friday, Oct. 11. The game is set for a 2 p.m. (CT) start from Lexington, Va.
