BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –The Samford football team fell to the Wofford Terriers in a heart-breaking 17-13 setback Saturday afternoon at Pete Hanna Stadium.
The loss marked the first time the Bulldogs have fallen to the Terriers since 2014, ending a nine-game Samford win streak in the series. Samford's record dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improved its mark to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in league play.
"It's always tough in this league each and every week," Samford head coach
Chris Hatcher said. "Defensively we continue to play well. Special teams had a little miscue there at the end, and then offensively, we moved the ball up and down the field, but we had trouble scoring the football. When you play a team that slows the game way down and you get very few opportunities you have to take advantage of them and we didn't execute well down the stretch."
For Samford in the loss,
Quincy Crittendon completed 31-of-41 passes for 242 yards and one touchdown.
Brendan Jenkins caught eight passes for 91 yards.
Preston Bird caught his first career touchdown pass on his lone reception for eight yards.
Micah Kelly rushed 16 times for 87 yards to lead the Samford run game.
Noah Martin led the Samford defense with 10 tackles, including seven solo stops.
Jaden Mosley had nine tackles and one forced fumbles.
C.J. Douglas had an interception to go along with his five tackles.
Wofford was led by Amari Odom, completing 12-of-20 passes for 203 yards and one interception. Kyle Watkins caught five passes for 112 yards. Ryan Ingram and Bryce Corriston had one rushing touchdown each for the Terriers. Jalen Marshall led the Wofford defense with 11 tackles on the day.
Samford got the scoring started when Crittendon hit Bird for an eight-yard touchdown pass and
Wilson Beaverstock added the extra point to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 5:54 left in the second quarter. Wofford tied the score when Corriston scored on a one-yard run and Devery Cagle added the PAT to make the score 7-7 with 1:56 left before halftime. Samford added one final first-half score when Beaverstock kicked a 36-yard field goal with 16 seconds left to send Samford to the locker room with a 10-7 lead.
On the opening drive of the third quarter, Beaverstock kicked a 30-yard field goal to push Samford's lead to 13-7 with 9:11 left in the third period. On Wofford's ensuing drive, Ingram scored on a one-yard run and Cagle's PAT gave the Terriers a 14-13 lead at the 3:44 mark in the third quarter.

th-and-3 play, giving the ball back to the Terriers with 36 seconds to go in the game.
Next up, Samford will step out of Southern Conference pay to host former OVC rival Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Nov. 9. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start from Pete Hanna Stadium.
