Samford Sets Regular-Season Wins Record With Victory At VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Samford men's basketball team set the school's regular-season wins record with a 102-63 victory at VMI Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall.

With the win, Samford improved to 22-3 overall and 11-1 in Southern Conference play. The 22 wins breaks the mark for regular-season victories of 21, accomplished three separate times, most recently last season. Samford has now won 22 of its last 23 games. VMI fell to 4-21 overall and 1-11 in league games.

"It's always a fun place to play here at VMI, they have a great atmosphere," Samford head coach Bucky McMillan said. "Any time you can score on 60 percent of your field goals and hold them under 40 percent, you're going to do pretty well in that game. I'm glad everybody got to play."

Samford was led in the win by Rylan Jones and Jaden Campbell with 16 points apiece. A.J. Staton-McCray tallied 13 points, while Jermaine Marshall added nine points. Achor Achor dished out a team-high five assists to go along with his seven points.

For VMI, Taeshaud Jackson and Corey Chesley had 16 points each. Stephen Olowoniyi had nine points and a game-high eight assists.

Samford raced out to an early 11-3 lead with 16:28 to go in the first half after a free throw by Staton-McCray. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 10 points at 21-11 at the 14:13 mark in the first half following a three-pointer by Marshall. With Samford leading, 21-13, the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run to push their lead to 31-13 with 10:36 left in the half after a layup by Nathan Johnson.

The Bulldogs pushed their lead out to 22 points at 41-19 with 7:19 left before halftime following a three-pointer by Jones. VMI fought back to cut the lead to 16 points at 49-33 with 1:48 to go in the first half after a layup by A.J. Clark. Samford scored seven of the final nine points of the half to take a 56-35 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Samford opened the second half with a 12-4 run to push its lead to 68-39 with 16:01 left in the game following a three-pointer by Achor. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 37 points at 82-45 with 10:06 to go after a layup by Johnson.

For the remainder of the contest, VMI could get no closer than 33 points. Samford finished with the convincing 102-63 win.

Samford will return home to play host to Western Carolina on Wednesday, Feb. 14. The game is set for an 8 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center and can be seen live on ESPNU.
