BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford men's basketball team continued its hot streak with an impressive 88-62 win over Western Carolina Wednesday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.

With the win, Samford improved to 23-3 overall and 12-1 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs have now won 23 of their last 24 games. Western Carolina fell to 18-8 overall and 7-6 in league play.

"This was another good win," Samford head coach
Bucky McMillan said. "Sometimes when you coach basketball teams, they coach themselves, and that's kind of what this team is like. We have a bunch of veterans and there's just not any let downs at all with this group. When you've got a group like that, they're so enjoyable to coach."

Samford was led in the win by
Achor Achor with 18 points.
Jermaine Marshall and
Jaden Campbell scored 16 points each, while
A.J. Staton-McCray added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Rylan Jones dished out a team-high five assists.

For Western Carolina, Vonterius Woolbright had 21 points and 13 rebounds. D.J. Campbell tallied 13 points, while Tre Jackson added 10 points for the Catamounts.

The Catamounts took an early 11-7 lead with 15:32 to go in the first half following a jumper by Kamar Robertson. Samford answered with an 11-2 run to take an 18-13 lead at the 12:50 mark in the first half after a jumper by Marshall.

Western Carolina fought back to take a 23-22 lead with 7:58 to go in the opening period after a layup by Campbell. Samford fought back with a 13-2 run to take a 35-25 lead with 4:04 left in the half after a jumper by Campbell. Samford held a 38-29 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

Samford opened the second half with a 12-5 run to take a 50-34 lead with 17:43 to go after a three-pointer by Campbell. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 20 points at 58-38 with 14:22 left in the game following a three-pointer by Campbell. Samford extended its lead to 24 points at 69-45 at the 10:32 mark after a layup by Staton-McCray.

Western Carolina fought back to cut the lead to 17 points at 71-54 with 7:08 to go after a pair of free throws by Jackson. Samford scored the next six points to stretch the lead back out to 23 points at 77-54 with 5:25 to go. After Western Carolina cut the lead to 17 points again at 79-62, Samford scored the last nine points of the game to finish with the 88-62 win.

Samford will next play at Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 17. The game is set for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Macon, Ga.
