BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team earned a pair of wins, defeating Southern Miss, 5-0 and Birmingham-Southern, 7-0, Saturday at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
With the wins, Samford is now 5-4 on the season. Southern Miss has a record of 0-2 and Birmingham-Southern now has a record of 4-1.
 
"Today was a really positive day for us in so many aspects," Samford head coach Oliver Reynolds said. "Firstly, I was happy that everyone on the team got a chance to play and enjoy the atmosphere of being out there and competing. Secondly, our team showed up from the first point and never took their foot of the gas until the job was done. There were a few areas that we worked on in practice leading up to the matches, and I think those were the key areas that made a big difference for us today. We got a lot of momentum from taking the doubles point. In singles we had a few matches where we played some of our best tennis and won convincingly and others where we had to fight hard and pull out some close wins. It is important that we can win those types of matches."
 
In the Southern Miss match, Samford won the doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 to secure the first point of the match.
 
In singles, Samford won at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions to take the 5-0 win. The matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles were not finished. At No. 1 singles, Maxwell Giddens defeated Dakotah Bobo, 6-7, 6-4, 10-8. On the No. 2 singles court, Sandeep Mohandoss defeated Shamirul Shahril, 6-4, 7-6. At No. 3 singles, Darcy Nicholls defeated Olimjon Nabiev, 6-2, 6-0. On the No. 4 court, Maksim Bogdanovich earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Saheb Sodhi.
 
Against Birmingham-Southern, Samford won on all three doubles courts to take an early 1-0 lead.
 
In singles, Samford swept all six matches for the 7-0 win. At No. 1 singles, J.B. Pickard defeated Hallet Green, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2, Sebastian Harrison defeated Sam Tolbert, 7-5, 6-2. On the No. 3 singles court, Yerrassyl Murat defeated Tanner DeBardelaben, 6-1, 6-2.
 
At No. 4 singles, Harrison Williams defeated Ryan King, 4-6, 6-1, 10-6. On the No. 5 singles court, Matthew Gooch defeated Eli Ingleson, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 6 singles, Ben Kiblinger earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tom Smith.
 
Next up, Samford will play at Belmont on Feb. 23. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start from Nashville, Tenn.
