Samford Drops Doubleheader On Friday At Cocky Classic

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – On the opening day of the Cocky Classic, the Samford softball team fell 8-3 in the opener to the Belmont Bruins and 3-1 to the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State.

The Bulldogs will enter Saturday with a record of 1-11 on the season. Belmont improved to 5-4 while the Gamecocks moved to 4-9.

In game one, freshman Karley Fuller was dealt her first loss of the season after allowing three earned runs while only recording the first out of the game. Sara Bond tossed the remainder of the game giving up five runs but only one was earned.

Seven of the eight Samford hits in the weekend opener belonged to the Bulldog trio of Sarah Squillace, McKayla Cothran and Logan Champion. Squilace led the way with her first three-hit game of the season while Cothran and Cothran each tallied two base knocks.

Before the Bulldogs batters had seen a pitch, the Belmont offense plated seven runs to start the game and added another in the top of the fourth to lead 8-0 heading into the fifth inning.

In the home half of the inning, Linsey Hargis gave Samford some life with her second home run of the season that cut the Bruin advantage to 8-1.

An uneventful sixth inning gave way to late-inning drama in the seventh. With only three outs to play with, Ansley Yantis worked a leadoff walk and scored two batters later on a Squillace RBI groundout. A Cothran single set up what proved to be the final Bulldog runs of the contest as a Champion single to left plated Cothran and Lindsey Nelson to make it an 8-3 final.

In game two, Jordyn Partain pitched to a complete game loss. The Junior allowed two earned over the course of her six-inning outing while walking six and fanning four Gamecock batters.

At the plate, Grier Bruce paced the Samford offense by going 2-for-3 with an RBI double that scored Squillace in the top of the third giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage through the middle innings.

Jacksonville State tied the game in the home half of the fifth at 1-1 before a single with the bases loaded scored a pair of Gamecocks in the sixth to make it a 3-1 game.

The Samford bats were silenced in the top of the seventh to cement the 3-1 final in favor of the Gamecocks.
