Samford Softball Drops Heartbreaker In Midweek at Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In the first road midweek of the season, the Samford softball fell in walk-off fashion to Alabama State as the Hornets bested the Bulldogs 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

The non-conference defeat drops Samford to 2-12 on the year. Alabama State moves to 8-7 in 2024.

Karley Fuller took the loss for the Bulldogs despite having the best outing of her season to date. The freshman only allowed two earned runs on one base while fanning 11 Hornet batters over the course of six-plus innings. Fuller retired 13-straight Alabama State batters from the second to the sixth inning.

Logan Champion once again led the Bulldog offense on Tuesday with an RBI single and a run scored. Senior Ansley Yantis was the lone Samford batter to pick up a multi-hit game while McKayla Cothran extended her team-best hit streak to seven games on Tuesday with a bunt single in the first inning.

After each team left a runner on in in the first inning, Alabama State's Charity Bibbs wiggled out of a bases-loaded Bulldog jam in the second before stranding two more Samford runners in the fourth to keep the contest scoreless heading into the later innings.

A Hornet error off the bat of Sarah Squillace opened the door for the Bulldogs as Samford struck first when third batters later Champion singled home Squillace. After another Alabama State fielding error, Champion stole home on a double steal play that put Samford up 2-0 heading to the sixth.

A quiet sixth was the prelude to a chaotic seventh that saw Fuller issued back-to-back walks to open the frame. After a fly out, Alabama State cut the lead to 2-1 with a single through the right side. The Hornets won the game when a bunt single forced a Bulldog throwing error that allowed both runners to come home to score.
