SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Playing without the services of several key players, the Samford men's basketball team dropped a 91-69 decision at Wofford on Wednesday evening at Richardson Indoor Stadium.
With the loss, Samford fell to 25-5 overall and 14-3 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improved to 16-14 overall and 9-8 in league action.
Samford was led in the loss by
Riley Allenspach with 12 points and five rebounds.
Lukas Walls and
Zach Loveday added 11 points each for Samford.
Achor Achor,
A.J. Staton-McCray and
Jaden Campbell did not play in the game for Samford.
"This was a tough result, but good on some fronts," Samford head coach
Bucky McMillan said. "We got to play a lot of guys who don't get to play as much. Obviously, Jaden will be back, Achor will be back and A.J. will be back, but it was in the best interest of the team to rest those guys and get them healed up. We've got some injuries and some sickness going on. It was great for our younger guys to get some experience."
For Wofford, Dillon Bailey had 20 points to lead the way. Chase Cormier scored 16 points for the Terriers, while Anthony Arrington had 15 points and Corey Tripp added 13 points for Wofford.
Samford jumped out to an early 11-5 lead with 15:00 to go in the first half following a three-pointer by Nathan Jonson. Wofford fought back to cut the lead to just two points at 14-12, but Samford answered with a 6-0 run to push its lead to eight points at 20-12 with 9:04 left in the opening half after a four-point play by
Rylan Jones.
Wofford fought back to take a 26-25 lead at the 4:53 mark in the first half after a layup by Kiler Filewich. After Samford retook the lead at 27-26, Wofford closed the half on an 11-2 run to take a 37-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Wofford stretched its lead to 15 points at 47-32 with 16:11 to go after a layup by Jeremy Lorenz. After Samford cut the lead to 47-34, Wofford went on a 21-5 run to push its lead to 68-39 with 9:09 to go after a jumper by Arrington. The Terriers led by as many as 39 points down the stretch, but Samford fought back to cut the final score to 91-69.
Samford will wrap up its regular season by playing host to The Citadel Saturday afternoon. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
