Cothran Powers Softball To Saturday Split At Bulldog Invitational

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Led by a monster day from McKayla Cothran, the Samford softball team overpowered the Troy Trojans by a score of 7-1 in the nightcap after dropping a 6-5 contest to Southern Miss on day two of the Mississippi State-host Bulldog Invitational.

With the Saturday split, Samford moves to 3-15 on the season. Troy will enter Sunday with a record of 15-7 while Southern Miss moves to 8-9.

In game one, Sara Bond took the loss for the Bulldogs. The sophomore allowed six runs in 6.1 innings with one strikeout and a quartet of walks.

Cothan's offensive explosion started in the opening game as the junior went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Grier Bruce also drove in a pair of runs against Southern Miss. Despite not recording a hit or a walk in the first game, Sarah Squillace batted in a run and scored once herself.

Southern Miss jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the home half of the second when a pair of Golden Eagles came around to score on a double.

Samford got on the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the fourth when Linsey Hargis scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Squillace. Two batters later, Lindsay Nelson and Cothran scored on Bruce's first triple of her career that pushed the Bulldogs out front at 3-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Southern Miss regained the lead at 4-3 with a two-run home run. The Bulldogs answered an inning later when Cothran doubled home Ansley Yantis and Squillace to make it a 5-4 contest heading to the ever-important seventh inning.

After loading the basses in the home half of the seventh, Southern Miss won in walk-off fashion when Samford committed a bases-loaded error that ended the game and handed the Golden Eagles a 6-5 win.

In the nightcap, Jordyn Partain picked up her second win for the season with a one-run complete-game effort. The junior also fanned five Trojans on the evening while scattering a trio of hits.

Cothran's hot hitting day carried over into game two as the Georgia native went 2-for-3 with three more RBIs and a run scored. Hargis added two base knocks of her own and scored once to aid in the Bulldog offense.

Troy's second batter of the game homer and gave the Trojans a 1-0, which they held until the fourth inning.

In the home half of the fourth, Addison Smith scampered home to tie the game thanks to a Trojan error. Samford took the lead for good in the contest when an Olivia Shaw sacrifice fly plated Logan Champion to make it 2-1.

Insurance was delivered in the sixth when the Bulldogs exploded for five runs in the frame. A bases-loaded error off the bat of Squillace scored Hargis before Cothran smacked a bases-clearing triple down the left field line. Cothran scored a few pitches later on a wild pitch to round out the 7-1 final.

The three-run triple was Cothran's first triple since April of 2022 and only the second of her Bulldog career.

Partain secured the first Bulldog victory of the weekend by retiring the Trojans in the top seventh in order.

Samford will conclude the weekend by playing host Mississippi State at 3 p.m. in an All-Bulldog battle. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+.
