Bulldogs Stumble In Weekend Finale To Chattanooga

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – To conclude the opening weekend of Southern Conference play, the Samford Softball team dropped an 8-3 decision to the Chattanooga Mocs on Sunday afternoon inside of Samford Softball Stadium.

The Bulldogs will head into the midweek with a record of 6-23 after being swept by the Mocs on the weekend. Chattanooga will leave Birmingham at 21-8 on the year.

Jordyn Partain started the game in the circle and was handed the loss for Samford after only lasting an inning. The junior allowed three runs on five hits in the opening frame. Sara Bond pitched the final six innings for the Bulldogs giving up five runs on nine hits with four free passes. Bond also fanned a quartet of Mocs.

Despite being in a losing effort, Brantley Drake continued her hot weekend. The freshman went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Sunday's finale.

Not to be outdone, Grier Bruce matched Drake's effort with her own 2-for-4 performance with a run driven in. The duo of Sarah Squillace and Olivia Shaw each recorded a base hit and scored once on Sunday afternoon.

Before the Bulldogs even had a chance to bat, Chattanooga jumped out to a 3-0 lead that included a two-out RBI triple. The Mocs added another pair of runs in the top of the third aided by a Samford error to make it a 5-0 game with two and a half innings in the books.

Samford finally broke through in the home half of the third when Bruce doubled home Squillace to cut the Moc advantage to 5-1 and dispose of the potential Chattanooga shutout.

Chattanooga answered by scoring a run in the top of the fourth before Samford attempted a rally in the bottom half of the inning.

The final Bulldog runs of the game came in the fourth when a Drake singled to center forcing a Chattanooga throwing error that allowed Ansley Yantis and Shaw to score on the play.

In the sixth, Chattanooga plated another pair of runs to crystalize the 8-3 final.
