Bulldogs Clinches Series Victory Over Wofford With Pair Of Wins

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – To open the road portion of Southern Conference play, the Samford softball team downed the Wofford Terriers in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon by scores of 3-2 and 6-1 at Hope Field.

With the wins, Samford moves to 9-23 overall and 2-3 in league games. The Terriers drop to 11-15 and 1-4 on the season.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, Jordyn Partain tossed 6.1 innings of two-run ball with six strikeouts to capture her fifth win of the season. Sara Bond picked up her second save in as many games by getting the final two outs with the bases loaded to secure the one-run victory.

Sarah Squillace led the charge offensively in game one as the junior went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple and scored twice. Adding to Squillace's production, McKayla Cothran recorded a pair of hits and drove in a run. In total, eight of the nine Bulldogs in the starting lineup had at least one base knock in the win.

Squillace made her presence known early with a leadoff single to shortstop on the fifth pitch of the game. The junior scored three batters later when Logan Champion flew out to left field to give the visiting Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after the opening frame.

The final two Samford runs of the contest came in the second when Linsey Hargis scored on a two-out Squillace triple to left-center. A Cothran single brought home Squillace on the next pitch giving Samford a 3-0 advantage with two innings in the books.

Following back-to-back quiet innings in the third and fourth, a Bulldog throwing error prolonged the frame in the fifth and allowed a pair of Terriers to come home to score.

With Samford clinging to a one-run lead entering the seventh inning, Partain allowed two Terriers to reach base before striking out the final Wofford batter she faced. After relieving Partain, Bond walked her first batter to load the bases before getting a strikeout and a flyout to end the game and finalize the 3-2 Bulldog Victory.

In game two, Karley Fuller notched her second win of the year. The freshman allowed one run and struck out two in her 6.1 innings of work. Just like in game one, Bond came in the seventh inning and recorded the final two outs.

Offensively, the Bulldog trio of Cothran, Champion and Shaw combined for six of the 11 Bulldog hits on the afternoon.

Cothran and Champion each went 2-for-4 with a run driven in while Cothran scored twice in the contest. Shaw scored once and had a 2-for-3 day in addition.

The nightcap proved to be a pitcher's duo for the first five innings of the game before a two-out RBI single off the bat of Champion plated Cothran to break the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth.

In the seventh, the floodgates opened and saw 10 Bulldog batters come to the plate. To open the inning, Shaw reached base with a leadoff single before moving to third on a pop-out and an Ansley Yantis single. The freshman made it a 2-0 when she scored on a single up the middle of the bat of Brantley Drake

Adding to her already impressive day, Squillace made it 4-0 Samford with a double to left field that scored Drake and Yantis. One at-bat later, Squillace scampered home on a Cothran single up the middle.

The final Samford run of the came a few batters later when Cothran scored on a pinch-hit single from Sarah Katona to make it a 6-0 game. The RBI single was Katona's first hit and RBI since March 18, 2023 against St. Thomas (MN).

Wofford scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and threatened for more before Bond slammed the door shut with a pair of strikeouts to end the game and crystalize the doubleheader sweep with a 6-1 victory.
