Fuller’s No-Hitter Highlights Samford’s Friday Split At The UNA Tournament

FLORENCE, Ala. – On a day that saw a freshman toss a no-hitter in a 19-run game, the Samford softball team split the opening day of the North Alabama-hosted UNA tournament by whomping Detroit Mercy 19-0 before dropping the nightcap 4-1 to the Murray State Racers on Friday.

Samford will enter the final day of the tournament with a 4-18 record in the 2024 season. Detroit Mercy drops to 1-14 while Murray State improves to 11-12.

In game one, freshman Karley Fuller became the first Bulldog pitcher since Mollie Hanson in 2016 to throw a complete game no-no. Fuller's final line in the contest was five shutout innings with six walks and a pair of strikeouts. Friday's no-hitter also marked Fuller's first colligate win.

Fellow freshman Katie Campbell had the best game of her young Bulldog career as Campbell went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four runs scored and eight total runs batted in. The eight RBIs in the win over Detroit Mercy are the most in a single game by a Samford batter since 2010.

Joining Campbell in the offensive bombardment, Ansley Yantis had three RBIs of her own while the Bulldog duo of Olivia Shaw and Logan Champion each had three hits with three runs scored and a run batted in.

To round out the onslaught, Sarah Squillace drove in a pair of runs on her own and Grier Bruce crossed home four times.

Samford's 19 runs against Detroit Mercy are the most runs scored in a single game since the Bulldogs dropped 19 on Southern in March of 2014.

A Campbell grand slam in the bottom of the first opened the floodgates as Samford scored five in the first, seven in the second, a two in the third and five in the fourth to make it a 19-0 final.

In game two, Sara Bond took the loss in the circle for the Bulldogs. The sophomore fanned a career-high eight batters while allowing two earned runs in her second complete game of the season.

The five Samford base hits were scattered among Shaw, Campbell, Bruce, Yantis and Linsey Hargis who also scored the lone Bulldog run of the contest.

Murray State got on the board first with an RBI single back up the middle in the first inning. Samford's single run came in the top of the third when Hargis scampered home on a Squllace sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1 with three innings in the books.

The Racers took the lead for the game in the bottom of the fourth with a lone before adding two more insurance runs in the sixth to nail down the 4-1 final and take the nightcap.

UP NEXT:
The Bulldogs will close out the final non-conference weekend of the season as Samford will take on Southern Miss at 10 a.m. before concluding the weekend with UMES at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
