Bulldog Softball Dominates Furman To Clinch Series Win On Saturday

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Despite being rained out in the midweek, the Samford softball team stayed hot on Saturday by beating the Furman Paladins 5-0 and 6-0 to clinch the squad's third-straight Southern Conference series win.

With the pair of wins, the Bulldogs move to 14-25 on the year and 7-4 in SoCon play. The losses drop the Paladins of Furman to 18-23 and 3-8 on the campaign.

Game one featured a vintage pitching performance from McKenzie Newcomb as the junior tossed a complete game three-hit shutout for her third win of the season. Newcomb fanned a season-high 11 batters and only walked one Paladin in her first start since Feb. 16.

Katie Campbell's impressive campaign stayed on track in Saturday's opener as she paced the team with a two-run home run in the first inning. Ansley Yantis had a game-high two hits to aide Campbell.

Samford took of advantage of back-to-back Furman errors to open the game as Sarah Squillace reached base on a Paladin fielding miscue. The junior came around to score a few pitches later when McKayla Cothran legged out an infield single that forced a throwing error by the Furman shortstop.

With one run in, one runner on base and two away in the opening frame, Campbell crushed her team-leading 11 homer of the season to blow the game open at 3-0.

In the midst of Newcomb retiring 12-straight batters, Samford plated the final two runs of the game in the fourth inning.

Following back-to-back groundouts to open the visiting half of the fourth, Olivia Shaw singled through the left side and immediately stole second to enter a scoring position. A third Furman error off the bat of Hargis allowed Shaw to come home. A Hargis stolen base set up a Yantis RBI single to make it a 5-0 contest heading to the later innings.

After the two-run fourth, Newcomb only allowed a pair of baserunners over the final three innings to secure the 5-0 Samford victory.

In game two, Partain matched Newcomb's performance with a complete game shutout of her own. The junior scattered four hits throughout seven innings with no walks and four strikeouts to pick up her seventh win of the season.

Offensively, six of the nine Bulldog hits in the nightcap belonged to the Samford trio of Campbell, Yantis and Grier Bruce. Campbell and Bruce each went 2-for-3 while Yantis finished off her Saturday with a 2-for-4 performance. The duo of Campbell and Logan Champion each drove in a pair of runs to go along with Cothran scoring twice.

Just like in the opener, the top of the lineup proved to be the sparkplug as Squillace and Cothran worked leadoff walks to open the game. Two batters and two outs later, the speedy pair came home to score on a Campbell two-run double to left center. The extra-base hit put Samford up 2-0 and gave the freshman her 38th and 39th RBIs of the season.

Furman's defensive woes led to more Bulldog runs in the third inning as a Paladin passed ball with the based load led to Cothran scoring on the play and set up Rylee Butler coming home on a Shaw sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 Samford after three innings in the books.

The final Bulldog eruption came in the top of the fifth when Bruce singled to left field to open the inning. In the next at-bat, Champion added some insurance with a two-run blast that landed off the wall in left field. Champion's fourth home run of the season pushed the final score to 6-0.

Samford's pitching staff will enter the series finale on Sunday having not given up a run in 19 innings of work and only one in the last 33 innings pitched.

Samford will go for the series sweep of the Paladins on Sunday. The first pitch is slated for noon CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
