Bulldog Softball Completes Weekend Sweep With Walk-Off Win Over UNCG

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – To close out an eventful week on the softball diamond, the Samford softball team walked off the defending Southern Conference champion UNCG Spartans 2-1 in nine innings on Sunday afternoon to earn a three-game weekend sweep.

With the sweep, Samford improves to 12-25 on the year and 5-4 in league play. Sunday's thriller dropped the Spartans to 23-17 and 6-3 in the SoCon.

In relief, McKenzie Newcomb picked up her first win since Feb. 11 going five shutout innings while only allowing a pair of Spartan hits. Sara Bond started in the circle for the Bulldogs and surrendered UNCG's only run in her four innings of work.

Logan Champion proved to be the catalyst for the Bulldog offense on Sunday afternoon as the Samford catcher collected a pair of hits while driving in the first Bulldog run and scoring the game-winner. Grier Bruce also had a pair of base knocks on the day.

Sunday's series finale featured a pitcher's duel as the two squads combined for a single hit through the first three innings of play.

UNCG broke through first in the fourth inning as a one-out walk came around to score on a single up the middle to make it 1-0 Spartans. Samford answered immediately in the home half of the frame when Sarah Squillace slapped a leadoff single through the left side. Squillace came around and scored to tie the game at 1-1 on Champion's RBI single through the left side.

With Newcomb's entrance in the top of the fifth, the pitching showdown returned as neither team threatened in the fifth and sixth innings to force extras.

In extras, a tame eighth set the stage for a wild ninth. In the final inning, Newcomb sat down the Spartans in order to set up a walk-off opportunity for the Bulldogs.

In the bottom of the ninth, Champion set the stage with a leadoff single to second, giving Katie Campbell a base runner. With a 1-2 count on Campbell, the freshman hit a ground ball to the UNCG shortstop, who sailed her throw to second base resulting in the ball ending up in the right-field corner. The error allowed Champion to score from first to give Samford the 2-1 win and the weekend sweep.
