Bulldogs Place 287 On SoCon’s Academic Honor Roll

SPARTANBURG, S.C.— Samford Athletics placed 287 student-athletes on the Southern Conference's Academic Honor Roll, released by the league Thursday. The 287 Samford student-athletes on the team are the second most of any Southern Conference school.
The Academic Honor Roll originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the award as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The Academic Honor Roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher for the academic year, were eligible the entire academic year and were members of the final squad lists. The award is different from the Academic All-Conference award, announced Thursday as well, which is determined by cumulative GPA and involves a participation requirement.
Of Samford's 287 student-athletes to make the team, the football squad led the way with 70 members. The women's track and field and cross-country teams combined for 37 representatives, followed by the baseball team with 29 members on the squad. The soccer team placed 28 student-athletes on the Honor Roll, while the men's track and field and cross-country teams combined to place 27 members on the squad.
The Samford softball team had 21 members on the Honor Roll, while volleyball had 15 representatives on the team. Men's basketball, women's basketball, men's tennis and women's tennis each had 11 members on the squad. Men's golf and women's golf placed eight members on the Honor Roll.
A total of 71 of Samford's entries received the Commissioner's Medal for having a GPA of 3.80 or higher, with 32 of those posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Overall, on the team, there were 2,284 selections. A total of 684 earned Commissioner's Medals, while 244 finished with 4.0 GPAs.
