Women’s Basketball Falls At Home To Wofford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team dropped an 84-49 decision to SoCon-leading Wofford Saturday afternoon in the Pete Hanna Center.

With the loss, Samford fell to 6-15 overall and 1-4 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improved to 13-5 overall and 5-0 in league play.

"I think we started the game on our heels, a little bit timid," Samford head coach Carley Kuhns said. "Obviously, they are a really, really good basketball team and I think we showed up to play that, a little bit out of fear. To me, the frustrating thing is that is the exact opposite of the way we showed up on Thursday (in a win over Furman)."

In the loss, Samford was led by Alonya Waldon with 10 points. Kennedy Langham, Annie Ramil and Jada Knight added seven points each.

For Wofford, Evangelia Paulk scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Molly Masingale scored 18 points for the Terriers, while Helen Matthews had 15 points and Maddie Heiss added 11 points for Wofford.

Wofford opened up a 16-4 lead with 6:20 to go in the first quarter following a three-pointer by Masingale. Samford scored the next six points to cut the lead to 16-10 with 3:51 remaining in the opening period after a layup by Langham. Wofford held a 20-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Samford closed to within three points at 20-17 after a three-pointer by Claire Johnson at the 9:39 mark in the second period. Wofford, however, answered with an 8-0 run to push its lead to 28-17 with 6:32 to go in the second quarter after a three-pointer by Masingale. Wofford held a 40-29 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

Wofford built its lead to 21 points at 55-34 with 5:46 to go in the third quarter following a three-pointer by Paulk. Samford cut the lead to 17 points at 55-38, but Wofford pushed the lead out to 28 points at 69-41 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Wofford led by as many as 35 points. The Terriers finished with the 84-49 win.

Samford will next play at Western Carolina on Thursday, Jan. 30. The game is set for a 5 p.m. (CT) start from Cullowhee, N.C.
