BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule today by hosting Berry College at the Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs dominated in all facets of the contest en route to a 94-35 victory to take their record to 5-11 on the season.
It was all Samford from the tip as
Aubrey Blankenship got off to a quick start after being inserted into the starting lineup. She scored 11 of her 13 points in the opening quarter doing in inside and outside. The Dogs were able to create open looks from behind the arc which they capitalized on by going 7-of-10 from three in the opening 10 minutes of play. Six different Samford players scored a bucket while
Kylee Lewandowski scored seven off the bench.
Turnovers have been a problem for the Bulldogs at times throughout the early portion of the season, but not tonight as they had a 10-0 assist-to-turnover margin in the opening quarter and had 25 assists on their 32 made shots for the night. Samford led 34-12 after the first quarter.
"I think our approach in shoot around and at the beginning of the game today was different," said head coach Carly Kuhns. "We showed up confident to win the game. Our start was great and the way we shared the ball, with 25 assists tonight, is when we are at our best."
The Bulldogs didn't let up as they continued to full-court press the Vikings, forcing 14 first-half turnovers and 27 for the game which they turned into 39 points. Samford shot over 50 percent in three of the four quarters, the third excluded as they were comfortably ahead 56-18 at the half.Â
The intensity never really wavered for the Dogs as they received production throughout the lineup, including from
Claire Johnson who tied her career-high with 18 points as she connected on 6-of-9 attempts from three.
Annie Ramil controlled the paint as she racked up a double-double finishing the night with 17 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Alonya Waldon had her fingerprints show up in multiple areas of the game as she provided 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists off the bench. Samford would go on to win the third quarter 12-11 and the fourth 26-6 as they closed on a 16-0 run led by
Jada Knight who added nine off the bench on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting night from the floor.Â
The Bulldogs ran away in every statistical category and will look to carry that momentum into conference play when they return to the floor in a week at Mercer. The Bears are 5-10 on their season and will be playing their first SoCon game as well.
