BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament with a 2-0 win over Wofford in the quarterfinal round Friday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
"The biggest thing I can say about our group is the way they maintained their composure against a really deep group defending," Samford head coach
Todd Yelton said. "A lot of times the game comes down to set pieces, and we really struggled early on in the season with that and we have come a long way and I'm just really, really proud of our kids."
With the win, Samford improved its record to 11-2-5. The win gives Samford a school-record 15-game unbeaten streak. Wofford ends its season with a mark of 6-9-6.
Annie McBride got the scoring started with a goal off an assist from
Caroline Smith in the 38th minute for a 1-0 Samford lead.
Sam De Luca added another goal in the 79th minute on a penalty kick to make the score 2-0.
For Samford in the win,
Martha Bishop had a team-high six shots, while De Luca had five shots. Samford goalkeeper
Peyton Hull saved one shot in posting her 11th shutout of the season.
Wofford was led by Saachi Bureau with two shots. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Navola saved eight shots, while allowing two goals.
Samford will play the winner of tonight's game between Chattanooga and Furman in the semifinal round Sunday at 1 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field.
