SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Samford men's basketball guard
Keaton Norris earned individual honors today as he was named Southern Conference Player of the Week as the league office released its men's basketball weekly awards this afternoon.
Norris was a catalyst in the Bulldog's going 2-1, with wins over Texas Southern and Central Arkansas in overtime. The Dog's lone defeat came against No. 21 Arkansas on Friday night, where they fell 79-75. Over the three-game road stretch, the senior averaged 17 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game.
The Ohio native started out the week with a career-high 22 points in Samford's 93-90 overtime win at Texas Southern. Norris went 6-of-11 from the floor, including a game-tying shot to force overtime and six points in overtime, while adding eight rebounds and five assists. The Bulldogs played the ranked Razorbacks tough on Friday night, falling by four points late. Norris scored 11 points, with four rebounds and five assists. He bounced back in a big way on Sunday afternoon in Samford's win at Central Arkansas. Norris had 18 points, seven assists, and five rebounds, including big baskets late that put Samford up two points in the final minute and a deep three as the shot clock was expiring.
The weekly award for Norris is the first for the Bulldogs in the early season. Samford returns home to host Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday night in the Pete Hanna Center. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. as the Eagles enter with a 2-2 record on the season.
