Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Propelled to Comeback By Career Fort Performance

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Samford men's basketball team took to the road today in Southern Conference play as they visited Wofford. The Bulldogs were able to snap their two-game losing skid behind a career night from Trey Fort who led Samford to a 16-point second half comeback victory. The Bulldog's 76-68 victory moves them to 20-7 on the season and 10-4 in SoCon play while Wofford drops to 14-13 overall and 8-6 in league play.

The Bulldogs got off to another sluggish start offensively as they opened 9-of-29 from the field in the first half. Trey Fort was carrying the Dog's offense on his back as he managed to score 17 of the team's 25 points in the first half. Usually one of the deepest teams in the country, sitting 18th in the country in bench points per game averaging 31, the Dogs had just three players score in the first half and had zero bench points. Rylan Jones and Josh Holloway chipped with the remaining points but Samford had to overcome multiple-minute long scoring droughts.

Defensively, they held Wofford to 41 percent shooting in the opening half and both sides each hit four threes in the first half. The Terriers handled the Bulldog's pressure well as they committed just five turnovers in the half and led Samford 34-25 at the break.

The Samford offense sparked in the second half, catching fire after falling down by as many as 16 points with 14 minutes remaining. Samford went on a 14-0 scoring run in a matter of just three minutes in the middle of the second half as Fort got help with six points from Josh Holloway in the run, Riley Allenspach getting a basket, and the run was capped with a Rylan Jones three.

Though he got more help in the second half, Fort was still the center of the show for the Bulldogs in the second half. He finished the night with a career-high 36 points, blowing his previous high of 25 out of the water. He went 13-of-17 from the field on the night, 4-of-6 from three, and added eight rebounds. Fort hadn't broken double-digits in the past two games but his explosion carried the Dogs back for the road victory.

Offensively, the Dogs shot 60 percent in the second half, 18-of-30, while using their defense to get easy buckets as they scored 16 points off turnovers. Jones finished with 14 points on the night for Samford as he knocked down four threes, while Josh Hollway also added 14 in his first game back in the starting lineup as he was an efficient 5-of-8.

The win marks the fourth straight season the Bulldogs have won 20 games in a season, a mark that had never been done before at Samford. The win keeps the Bulldogs alive in the regular season SoCon standings as they remain a game behind UNCG who beat Furman today and a half game behind Chattanooga who plays ETSU tonight.

Up next, the Dogs return home for their final homestand of the season as they welcome Furman on Wednesday and Western Carolina next Saturday. The Bulldogs will look to get back at the Paladins after falling 72-70 on the road early in the year.
