STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Samford softball team hit the road today for a midweek tilt against their toughest test to date as they faced No. 17 Mississippi State. The Samford Bulldogs carried a five-game winning streak into the matchup today, but that was snapped as Miss State came out on top 6-1. Samford falls to 6-3 after the defeat while Miss State moves to 10-1.
Samford gave the ball to their ace
Jordyn Partain who entered with a 3-1 record and cruised through her first inning of work. The home side got to her in the second inning as she walked two and allowed two hits as they scratched across two runs.
The home side added one more run in the bottom of the third. Samford entered the game averaging over seven runs per game so far this season but they were held to two hits for the game. They both came from
Katie Campbell who singled in her first at-bat in the second inning and homered to right center field in the fifth, her team-leading third long ball of the season.
It looked like Samford could be building some momentum in the game but Miss State hit back with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth that sealed the game. A double, walk, and three-run homerun that narrowly got away from
Katie Hart in left field as she attempted to rob it.Â
That signaled the end of the day for Partain whose final line read 4.2 innings, six runs, and six hits.
Olivia Treece would finish up the inning and
Olivia Trout would close the game with a clean inning in the sixth, but the Samford offense had no answer for Mississippi State pitching on the day.
The Bulldogs are back in action this weekend as they head to a three-day tournament hosted by UAB. They will start on Friday by facing Southern Indiana and Belmont before facing UAB on Saturday and Purdue on Sunday.
