SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford women's basketball team picked up its fourth-straight win in a huge 62-54 Southern Conference road win at Wofford Thursday evening at Richardson Indoor Stadium.
With the win, Samford improved its record to 11-16 overall and 6-5 in Southern Conference play. Wofford fell to 15-9 overall and 7-4 in SoCon games.
Freshman Claire Johnson led Samford with 20 points and six rebounds in the win. Alonya Waldon tallied 17 points, while Kennedy Langham added 14 points for the Bulldogs.
For Wofford, Evangelia Paulk posted a triple double, finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. Toni Warren added 12 points for the Terriers.
Samford built an early 15-8 lead with 5:37 to go in the first quarter following a three-pointer by Waldon. Wofford came back with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 15-14 with 59 seconds left in the first quarter after a pair of free throws by Warren. Two free throws and a layup by Langham stretched Samford's lead to 19-14 at the end of the opening period.
After Wofford cut the Samford lead to 19-16, Samford went on a 13-0 run to push its lead to 32-16 with 4:42 to go in the second quarter after a layup by Langham. Wofford fought back to cut the lead to 13 points at 34-21 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Bulldogs pushed their lead out to 15 points at 40-25 after a three-point play by Johnson with 8:37 to go in the third period. Wofford fought back to cut the lead to nine point at 42-33 with 6:17 remaining in the third quarter after a layup by Paulk. Samford extended the lead back out to 13 points at 48-35 after a layup by Johnson with 2:58 left in the third period. Samford held a 48-37 lead at the end of the third period.
In the fourth quarter, Wofford cut the lead to eight points at 52-44 with 6:47 to go after a pair of free throws by Molly Masingale. After Samford pushed the lead back out to 10 points, Wofford closed to within six points at 54-48 with 3:09 remaining after a layup by Maddie Heiss. With Samford leading, 56-50, a three-pointer by Samford's Sadie Stetson pushed the lead back out to nine points at 59-50 with 50 seconds to go. Wofford could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way as Samford came away with the 62-54 win.
Samford will next play at Furman on Saturday, Feb. 22. The game is set for a 6 p.m. (CT) start from Greenville, S.C.
