BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 win over cross-town rival UAB Friday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
With the win, Samford improved its season record to 5-2. UAB fell to 3-4 with the loss.
 
The match-winning point came on the No. 1 singles court where Sandeep Mohandoss defeated Noah Malige, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
 
"Today was another great day for our team," Samford head coach Oliver Reynolds said. "We have been having some great practices, and it is showing. UAB is an extremely solid team, and for us to win on the final court at number one was a great win for this team. Sandeep played his heart out like the rest of the guys to clinch the match for us. We have more tough matches on Sunday against Kennesaw State and Piedmont."
 
UAB took an early lead, winning on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts to take the 1-0 advantage.
 
In singles, in addition to the clinching win at No. 1, the Bulldogs earned wins at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6. At No. 2 singles, Darcy Nicholls defeated Ondrej Valek, 6-3, 7-5. On the No. 5 singles court, Sebastian Harrison earned a 7-5, 6-3 win over Hoan Mouret. At No. 6 singles, Will Gray defeated Jake Anthony, 6-2, 6-3.
 
Samford will play host to both Kennesaw State and Piedmont on Sunday, Feb. 9. The matches are set for 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Samford Tennis Center.
