GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford women's tennis team opened Southern Conference play with a  4-3 win at UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, Samford improved its record to 8-7 overall and 1-0 in Southern Conference play. UNCG dropped its record to 3-11 overall and 0-3 in league play.
 
In doubles, Samford won on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts to take the first point of the match. At No. 2 doubles, Margaret Jaraczewski and Hailey Troup defeated Sydney Bly and Raegan Mitchell, 7-5. On the No. 3 doubles court, Eleni Liakonis and Meredith Taylor earned a 6-1 win over Elisabeth Birkevold and Lauren Thomson.
 
In singles, Samford earned wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 to take the 4-3 win. At No. 2 singles, Liakonis defeated Alexandra Dodashev, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. On the No. 4 singles court, Taylor defeated Mitchell, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 6 singles, Libby Blair picked up a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Birkevold.
 
Next up, Samford will play at Western Carolina on Sunday, Mar. 23. The match is set for an 11 a.m. (CT) start from Cullowhee, N.C.
