BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University football team concluded its first week of spring practice with its first workout in pads Friday morning at Pete Hanna Stadium.
The practice was the third workout of the spring so far. Samford head coach
Chris Hatcher praised the work of his team in the early-morning practice.
"I thought we had a good day," Hatcher said. "We transitioned well, we're learning how to practice. We did a good job of thudding and taking care of one another."
Hatcher talked about what he has seen so far on both sides of the ball. Defensively, the Bulldogs will be employing a new scheme this season, which he says the players are doing a good job of picking up.
"I think defensively, we're going to lean a lot on
Jaden Mosley, he's kind of the bell cow of that operation," Hatcher said. "We're trying to find some corners and some depth there at the safety position. I feel good about our defensive ends, we're running a little different scheme, so they're kind of having to adjust a little bit to the alignment."
On the offensive side, Hatcher addressed the youth of the offensive line and the depth at the quarterback position.
"Offensively, we have no returners on the offensive line, so we're having to play with a brand-new group," Hatcher said. "But I've seen some good things, we've just got to get used to working together. I've been really pleased with our backup quarterbacks,
Haden Klees,
Brady Stober and
Charlie Gilliam, those guys have really looked good, along with our starter,
Quincy Crittendon."
Hatcher said he feels good about where the team is heading into Spring Break next week.
"All-in-all it's been good," Hatcher said. "Our special teams are coming along well. We'll take a Spring Break and come back and get back to work and hopefully we can pick up where we left off today."
Samford will take the next week off for Spring Break and will return to practice on Monday, March 17, with a practice at 4:15 p.m. The Bulldogs will go through two scrimmages during spring practice, with scrimmages scheduled for March 28 and April 4.
Samford will open the 2025 season by hosting West Georgia on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Pete Hanna Stadium.
